The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is a book written about the great depression. The main characters in the book are a group of people, family members and friends, who are traveling the U.S. in search of jobs. This group has to face the bumps in the road that the great depression is bringing, not only to them, but hundreds of thousands of other people in the same position. This story is a heartbreaking tale of how a family has survived throughout the hardships of the great depression.
The first thing that i noticed when i started reading this book, is that the way people spoke in the book was very different than the way people speak today, in this era. The book was written in the 1960's, which tells me that people 50 years ago spoke differently than people today. I think that the author narrated the book in the accent of how people spoke in the 1960's, instead of the proper way the words are suppose to be pronounced because he wanted to make the book sound more in the time period. The great depression ranged from the years 1930 to around the early 1940's, which tells me that the author wrote this book in an earlier time period. I think that the author tried to make the atmosphere of the book seem more in the time period of the Great depression by making the way the book was written have a tint of the accent of people during that time period.
This book really connects to our life right now, because although there is not a great depression going on right now, individual people are having situations alike the depression. Although the community we live in does not know it, many people are homeless, broke and with out food in this world right now. What connects the book Grapes of Wrath, and our world, is that they both in certain ways contain an environment for people that is a like the great depression.
Sofia- i think you had a really good reading response to the Grapes of Wrath. Can you tell us why the great depression happened? Did the book explain more about it? I feel like people everywhere were trying to find jobs because of the great depression, but how did this start? I feel like you had very good description and you really thought into your characters shoes. I also liked to get a look at your opinion in the book which gave me a whole new way to look at things. I feel like you gave me the perfect amount of information and i you really pulled me into wanting to read more about this story. Good Job Sofia!
ReplyDeleteThankyou! The book never really elaborated on how the great depression started, but it did take me through how the family went from getting kicked out of there house, to living on the streets looking for jobs. Although the book never told me how the great depression started, I happen to know how it started. Although there is no one main cause, the stalk markets crashes, people stopped spending money, therefor people could no longer make money and prices raised which caused a break down in America. This was considered the Great Depression.
